4 Affordable Ways to KonMari Your Pantry

Maybe it's just me but I feel a bit bombarded by this KonMari movement. Between the trending topics on Pinterest, my Google feed, and suggested Youtube video. I can't help but to get hit over the head with it.

Are you with me or am I totally alone here?

It feels like everyone is talking about KonMari everywhere I turn. And somehow I have managed to live on this little island until now. I say that because when I began to finally read the post I noticed they dated back more than a year or so. So I am totally late to the party, as usual.

Are you wondering what the heck is a KonMari and what it has to do with home organizing? Or better yet why is everyone talking about it?

Initially I was not interested in discussing it with the #tribe. Because I wasn't sure if I could add anything new to the conversation especially being so late.

But as a teacher told me, there is no new concept just remixes. So here's my remix on the KonMari method.

For those of you who are late to the KonMari party, but are curious enough that you decided to lift your head up out of the sand on your imaginary island.

In this post, I will explain what the KonMari method is, the rules of the KonMari method (as stated by KonMari herself), 4 ways to KonMari your pantry, and as always where you can find affordable essential for your KonMari pantry organization project.

KonMari Method Basics

The KonMari Method encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, miscellaneous items, and, finally, sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. People around the world have been drawn to this philosophy because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and forward-looking.

6 Rules of KonMari

According to Marie Kondo, there are 6 simple rules to follow when decluttering and organizing your home. Be sure to keep reading this post to see how I you can apply these rules to decluttering and organizing your pantry.

1. Commit to tidying up.

Pretty much like anything else in life mindset is key. When it comes to keeping a tidy home mindset is just as important. Which is why this is likely rule number 1, because the KonMari method starts with making a lifestyle change.

#tribe I know you are not a slob, but for the sake of the KonMari method you gotta commit girl.

2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle.

Although I noticed that the overall theme about KonMari on Pinterest seemed to focus on minimalist style and the use of labels. The true aim of the method seems to be focused on encouraging you to be  intentional.

You may not want a farmhouse Pinterest stamped home. Your ideal lifestyle may be an off the grid cabin or a townhouse in a trendy downtown neighborhood where you can walk to a local restaurant or park with your family.

Whatever your ideal lifestyle is you need to know what that. Because once you know your ideal lifestyle. Then you can organize your home in a way that fits that.

3. Finish discarding first.

If you are apart of the #tribe you know I highly recommend beginning each home organization project by sorting and discarding unwanted items. Organizing and decluttering your home usually start with getting rid of stuff you don't need.

Just sit down. Sort through it all. And let go of some stuff. Because if it doesn't serve a purpose currently then it is likely time to let it go. Let those items find a new home with someone who actually needs it.

There are so many shelter that need supplies. 

Of course you can always give to your local Goodwill. But when possible I recommend going directly to a shelter because you know the items are going directly to someone in need. 

This is in by no means in offensive to the Goodwill. But since they are so well known they tend to get a lot of donations whereas local shelters often go without there basic needs being met.

Please note the Goodwill is a great organization that provides a lot of support to those in needs. They make a point to provide transparency and provide support to those in need.

4. Tidy by category, not by location.

I may have misunderstood this rule, sorry I didn't read the book y'all. If I have butchered this rule please correct me below in the comments section.

I organize my home by areas, clearly you can tell that by the content I share on Big Bold Dream. I don't necessarily understand how you can organize by category and not locations.

I guess maybe you could go organize all the clothes in your home. But if that's what she had in mind. Then I definitely can't get with that.

It's hard enough for me to organize under the kitchen sink. I definitely can't organize all the clothes in my home at once.

I can take or leave this rule. #tribe what are your thoughts on the KonMari method I would love to hear from you, let's continue the conversation.

5. Follow the right order.

Now, what now? I have no clue what this means. So I'm not even going to go there. I guess we need to read the book for this one to make sense.

6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy.

A big part of the minimalist movement focuses on purging. The KonMari method seems to be focused on intentional purging. Which is important, because it doesn't make sense to throw away stuff your only going to repurchase later.

You should definitely keep anything with sentimental value.

4 Affordable Ways to KonMari Your Pantry

Now that we've covered the KonMari basics let's get on to the good part. Hopefully the part you came for. Here's how you can apply the KonMari method to organizing your kitchen pantry even though you didn't read the book. Here's how you can KonMari your kitchen pantry with 4 simple steps.

1. Decide on a time and date to organize your pantry.

2. Find your pantry organization inspiration. Think in terms of, what you want to accomplish by the end of organizing your pantry style wise?

3. Go through your pantry and begin to sort through each item. Decide what items you want to keep, discard, and/or donate.

4. Group together items by category - putting like items together. Also, consider placing items in your pantry based on the frequency of use.

6 Brilliant Steps to Organize your Linen Closet

Now I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but I organized and de-cluttered our linen closet so well that I cleared up enough space to empty two shelves. Which I decided to used them to store our printer, books, and random nick knacks.

Is it just me or do you find yourself thinking where and when did I get all this stuff every time you tackle a home organization project. Somehow I grew a garden of books which is weird because I know I donated a lot of our books during our last move.

Anywho in this post, I’ll share with you 6 simple steps to organize your linen closet, why you need to get started today, and linen closet organization essentials shopping list. Once you read these tips you will wonder why you didn't organize your linen closet sooner.

One of the reasons, I decided to organize our linen closet was in preparation for our little one Rose. I needed to change my office and vanity room into a nursery. Because I wasn't ready to get rid of all the items in my office. I decided to sell the larger pieces of furniture that I felt I could do without.

The remaining items like hair supplies, makeup, and my book collection had to go somewhere in our home. I didn't want to put them in our outdoor shed because I still use them regularly.

Which inspired me to declutter  and reorganize our linen closet. I was able to finish in just one day. I quickly realized there was a lot of unused space in our linen closet.

If you give these linen closet organizing tips a try you will likely find some additional space too.

Organizing your linen closet is a great way to find storage space for your home. The #tribe is all about make use of every inch of existing storage space.

After all, who needs three shelves of towel. I mean unless you have a household full of people. You can stand to get rid of some of those linens.

I personally find it difficult to neatly fold and stack bed linens so I decided to store our bed linen in a storage bin that sits on the floor of our linen closet.

Depending on the location of your linen closet this can also be a great space to store overflow toiletries and laundry items. If you have kids you may find the linen closet to be a great place to store cleaning items.

With our little one learning, walking, and getting into everything, in what feel like less than five seconds time. We've found it best to store our bathroom cleaning products in the linen closet.

Because its easy for her to open the sink cabinet but she doesn't yet know how to open doors. So if you have a toddler you may want to make space to store your cleaning products in the linen closet.

3. Fold and Stack Linen You can fold your linen however you like. As long as they look neat. A organizing tip is to face the open seams towards the wall. If you want to display your bed linens you may want to try using the KonMari method.
4. Add Baskets These are great for storing smaller items that you don't necessarily want to display. But are not able to fit under your bathroom sink. 
5. Over the Door Storage You can totally do without over the door storage for your iron and ironing board. But I totally want  one for our linen closet because I am tired of getting hit with the iron board. I totally have my husband to thank or that, can you relate girl.

6. 6. Keep it fresh Adding scented satchels or wall freshners are great ways to freshen up your linen closets.

I think I for sure get a little bit of home organization envy. Like for real the green eye monster hits me every time I see a beautifully organized refrigerator on Pinterest or YouTube.

If your not totally nuts about home organization than this probably sounds ridiculous to you.

But you have got to admit there is something ASMR like about beautifully organized spaces even if it's not your taste or style.

When I see someone who has an organized refrigerator it makes me think they have they've got there stuff together'.

I just don't see myself as being one of those people. Seeing as how I find it hard to get motivated to throw out leftover.

Yeah I totally just admitted that. So go ahead and judge me. Hey it's an extra dirty dish to clean that I can avoid if I just leave it in the fridge for another day.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks like this. I know your with me Momma, it's ok you don't have to say it out loud - just nod your head and keep reading.

Don't get me wrong I love to organize. And if you have been here before you know I'm all about saving money.

So I figured maybe just maybe fridge organization would be worth trying if it reduced our food waste. My only stipulation was that it had to be extremely affordable and require as little of a time commitment as possible.

If it helps keep the fridge clean, it only makes sense to give it a try.

When I started taking inventory of our fridge to begin this organization project I realized our fridge is never really overflowing with food. The only benefit to doing this project is that it would give our items a flat resting place instead of our wire shelves.

Word to the wise, if you purchase a lot of pre-made food, produce, snacks, or meal prep organizing your fridge with storage container is necessary.

Once I took inventory of my fridge I realized we don't by any of the above. But since I had already done the research I figured I may as well share with you.

Anywho my husband and I had so much fun visiting family, exploring Santa Monica, and celebrating my cousin wedding. Although it was a short trip we definitely made the most of every moment.

While visiting the Santa Monica Pier we decided to stop by this beautiful hotel with large bay windows for drinks before heading to visit family.

And boy am I glad we did. Not only was the hotel beautiful but the walk to the hotel was breath taking.

I'm originally from California but it has been a while since I have seen California architecture. Every time I visit I'm reminded how much I love {textured and smooth} stucco buildings. They're just classic, distinctive, and beautiful.

While at the hotel we had a great conversation with the bartender {he was a really cool guy}. I ordered this amazing pear drink with rosemary that I don't think my taste buds will ever be able to forget.

Anyhow it really inspired me to start creating my own concoctions at home. I wanted to share the recipe to my favorite fizzy mocktails at home.

Sparkling Lemonade Mocktail

Ingredients

• Ice
• Lemon
• Sugar
• 1.5 oz Frozen Lemonade Concentrate
• 10 ounces of soda (Blood orange Italian soda, Sprite, or 7UP)
• Garnishes lemon, orange, or lime

Instructions

1. Fill a large glass halfway with ice.
2. Rub the rim of the glass with a lemon.
3. Pour sugar in a large bowl, and dip the rim of the glass in sugar.
4. Add the soda and frozen lemonade concentrate and stir with a spoon.
5. Garnish with  lemon, orange, or lime.

If you want to spice this drink up add equal amount of sparkling white wine. I have made this drink for several parties over the years and it is always a big hit. Don't forget to give this recipes a try at home.

Have you ever looked under your kitchen sink for a bottle of dish detergent? You know you bought it but because you didn't immediately see it upon opening your kitchen cabinet you just add it to the grocery list and keep going.

When it comes to the space under the kitchen sink it's like if it doesn't slap you in the face then its not under there. And for some reason the space under the kitchen sink is always deep. Unless your a plumber who really wants to crawl in the area under the kitchen sink.

You are not alone in this home organization struggle. I get it. As I write this I'm thinking about how I need to get off my butt to reorganize under the kitchen sink area.


It has been about a year since I last organized under my kitchen sink. I went reorganizing crazy when I was nesting during my pregnancy with Rose.

But now that she's here and life is happening. My home is once again back to looking like a hot mess.

Needless to say its time for me to tackle under the kitchen sink again in our home. So here are a few essentials that will help you to organize under the kitchen sink.

1. Plastic Caddy - I think I recommend some form of baskets on every home organization project. I guess I just can't get enough of them. They just come in handy with cleaning, organizing, and decluttering. With these plastic caddy I like to create a cleaning caddy that I can take out to conveniently clean different areas of the house. We have two and they are great for storing cleaning rags and sprays.

2. Command Hooks- Using hooks on the inside of your cabinet is a perfect solution for hanging your rubber gloves.

3. Spray bottles- I love these spray bottles and I use them to dilute my household cleaners. I own every one of the spray bottles that the Dollar Tree sells. Although these are on smaller size they will fit perfectly in your cleaning caddy. Plus they have lasted the longest all the other one have broken on me except this one. 

4. Wire shelf- This one depend on what kind of products you store under your kitchen sink. I tend to buy bulk size products, so this wouldn't work for me. But this wire shelf maybe helpful for stacking different products.

5. Over the door storage for plastic bags these are perfect for organizing all those empty grocery bags in one place.

6. Shelving unit - These two tier drawer organizers are great for storing scrubbing pads, dish detergent tabs, and other small items. 

7. Plastic Storage Bins are great to store and stack different items like rags, cleaning supplies, and so on.

In case you are looking at this post wondering where are your before and after photos for your under the kitchen sink organization project. While our family is currently in transition.

With the possibility of downsizing in loom I decided not to take on any home organization project since I maybe packing up our home soon. With a little one the prospect of moving is a big task.

So we are slowly but surely packing items we don't use and storing them with family. If we do move we most definitely won't have as much space as we do currently. Which should inspire some interesting solutions that I will share with you.
