How to Master Monthly Meal Planning & Grocery Shopping

February 07, 2019
Even the best cook will come to dread weekly grocery shopping trips. If you are a new mom you've likely began to despise packing up the house to go out into the world. Let alone visit the grocery store with its endless aisles, lengthy check out lanes, and crowds of people.

Although planning a monthly meal plan sounds like a big task. If you try a few of my simple tips grocery shopping and meal planning for your family will never be the same. The key to monthly meal planning is taking advantage of your family favorites meals.

15 Make-Ahead Freezer Meals for Moms to Be

May 17, 2018

I am in full on nesting mode trying to do everything I can think of to prepare for baby Rose. Including but not limited to writing 15 plus blog post, prerecording content for Youtube, and scheduling weekly emails until May. Because let's face it, my time will no longer be my own and I am mentally trying to prepare myself to care for someone else.

Realistically I can't steer two ships at once. Since I'm planning to breastfeed and cloth diaper I know I will have my hands full. So I am giving permission to put everything else on the back burner while we get to know and nurture our little nugget.

In addition to all my work, I am pretty much Suzy homemaker managing the household and taking a lot of pride in cooking for our family. But I've quickly realized that monthly meal planning and grocery shopping will probably not be happening once we get home from the hospital. So I've been doing a lot research trying to find great recipes that freeze well and that we will look forward to eating. I wanted to share my favorite make ahead freezer recipes.

Make Ahead Freezer Dinner Recipes

1- Meatloaf
I'm not going to lie I was pretty skeptical about freezing a meatloaf. But I had to remind myself it's not any different from freezing burger patties. For our meatloaf I keep it simple with ground turkey, an egg, bread crumbs, a green bell pepper, an onion, season salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, tomato sauce, and Worcester sauce.

2- Burgers
I love the convenience of pre-made burger in the freezer it's a no fuss and no brainer meal. I mix together ground turkey, spinach, onion, season salt, and pepper. Then using wax paper I shape each patty, stack them up, wrap the stack in plastic wrap, and stick them in a freezer bag.

3- Chicken, Rice, and Broccoli Casseroles
When researching freezer meals I noticed that casserole dishes were frequently mentioned. Although I don't typically make casseroles I did decide we would give this recipe a try.

4- Chicken Pot Pie
As a kid I loved chicken pot pie, but as an adult I almost never eat it anymore. I most surely have never imagined making it at home. But after reading over some recipes making a pot pie seem like a no brainer. You can even cheat like I plan to and use pre-made pie crust and pie crust roll (for the top of your pot pie).

5- Lasagna
Lasagna is definitely a frozen dinner classic, I use to love Stouffer Lasagna but since I don't eat beef it's been a no go. Last time I made lasagna I realized just how much I've outgrown my love of pasta. I'll be making our lasagna with zucchini as the noddles.

6- Chili
We love chili so this one was a must have. I'm planning on cooking my ground turkey and then combining all my ingredients and dumping them into a ziploc bag. Our chili recipe we use a can of tomato sauce, can of diced tomato, can of corn, can of kidney beans, can of black beans, garlic power, and onion powder.

7- Garlic Lemon Chicken
This will be another first for us but it seemed like a great dump meal that could easily be served with rice and veggies.

8- Ham and Cheese Potato Bake
This will be another first for us but it included ingredient that we love. Although I do plan to switch the ham out for turkey because we don't eat pork either.

9- Shrimp Fried Rice
I love to make fresh shrimp fried rice and if you ask me it taste better than our local Chinese restaurant. Based on what I've seen and heard online fried rice makes for a great freezer meal.

10- Freezer Turkey and Cheese Sandwich
I figured if you can freeze a PB&J sandwich then why not turkey and cheese. We don't always eat sandwiches so anything I can do to extend the life of our cheese and turkey sounds great to me. More than likely we'll eat these as grilled sandwich and I'm looking forward to it!

11- Broccoli Cheddar Soup
I was a sucker for this recipe as soon as I seen the picture. I plan to treat it like a dump meal and put it in the slow cooker before serving.

12- Cheeseburger Soup
We love our cheeseburger soup but of course it's made with turkey and not beef. But it is still delicious to us. I'm looking forward to seeing how this recipe does as a dump/slower cooker meal. Finger crossed, I am nervous about the consistency not being right if I do this as a dump meal. So I very well may go ahead make the roue and add the cheese and milk just to ensure there are no issues later.

Breakfast

13- Waffle
If you follow me on Instagram you know from my Instastory that we love to have waffles for breakfast. I have been making and freezing waffles for a while now. We simply heat them in the toaster over and they are delicious. I typically make this with regular flour but I currently have a surplus of rice flour so who knows I may try making these gluten free, only time will tell.

14- Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
When I said I was Suzy homemaker I wasn't kidding, I love to bake, surprisingly. I have been obsessed with banana bread for over a year now. Its inexpensive, quick, and keeps well in the freezer. This go round I will likely make them as muffin to ensure the keep for as long as possible because it can be hard at times to eat a whole loaf in a timely manner between the two of us.

15- Turkey, Egg, and Cheese Muffins
This will be our first time trying this recipe but I wanted to make sure we have a protein rich breakfast option since I will be breastfeeding. I will say I'm excited about the variety of options you can make with just a few ingredients.

Confessions of a Meal Planner

February 22, 2017

I’ve been weekly meal planning for over a year now, I have it down to a science. Fridays I review my Pinterest board for new recipes, check my stock, decide on a meal plan, and grocery shop. Currently our pantry and freezer is fairly stocked, which I must say is a great feeling.

We are overflowing in everything from chicken to sausage. This has made grocery shopping easier and less expensive than normal, lately I've been shopping for perishables only (i.e. milk, creamer, fresh veggies, and fruit).

Saves Time

Meal planning eliminates the dreaded question of what are we going to eat tonight. There is nothing I enjoy more than being able to go through the week without thinking about a meal. If you're a wife, mom, or single girl you know if you get home and there's nothing made or ready to be made, then take out it is.  Take out for me does not usually end well.

Makes Grocery Shopping a Breeze

Can’t say enough about how much time I save at the grocery store when I have my list in hand. Carrying a printable, memo pad, or Keep App makes shopping quick. If you are familiar with your grocery store layout then your trip will be that much easier. Personally, I'm a paper girl so marking off each item ensures I don't go down the same aisle twice. Grab your shopping planner printable (click on image).

Cooking is a Joy

Cooking has become an enjoyable experience again. I don’t know about you but between working, taking care of a household, and trying to be superwomen for everyone you don’t have a ton of free time. Meal planning for me means I can set aside time to cook (on my selected days) or pull out my crockpot if I don’t feel like slaving in the kitchen.

Meal Planning Trial and Error Lesson

Over time I have learned the importance of keeping fool proof meals available (like pizza or burgers). They are perfect for those nights where you run through the food quicker than expected, you don’t feel like cooking, or you can’t cook. Ultimately have a hubby proof meal option that will free you up in case you need help. Hopefully in the near future, I’ll be using homemade freezer meals as our fool proof option, but I'm going to take it one day at a time.

Makes Budgeting Easier

After I have assessed our pantry and freezer according to our meal plan. I make my list of items needed for the month. Then I estimate the total cost typically I am right on target. Recently I decided it's important to decide on a grocery budget to be more intentional with our spending. I thought a monthly grocery budget of $180 which is $3 a day per person would be plenty to fulfill our household needs.

For the integrity of the budget in the coming months I think the cash envelope system maybe a great option. Cash envelopes just ensure I don’t go over budget during our trips throughout the month. If I’m over budget, I’ll have to find places to cut cost and still maintain our meal plan for the month.

January Meal Plan

  • Fajita Chicken Alfredo
  • Beans + Rice + Cornbread
  • Chicken Marsala
  • Pizza x 2
  • Enchiladas

My Key Lessons From My First Monthly Meal Plan

January was our first month doing monthly meal planning. Originally I was inspired to try monthly meal planning after watching Jemerill's Large Family Table, I figure if she could monthly meal plan for a family of 9 I could definitely do it for two. I was really excited to try out monthly meal planning I figured if nothing else it would reduce our need to go to the grocery store weekly.
  1. Stick with your household staple items. If you truly want to reduce your visits to the grocery store, do not try use this time to cheap out on staple products. For our first grocery trip in January I visited Aldi instead of our normal destination Food Depot, we ran into a few hiccups. We are avid milk, coffee, and creamer consumers I purchased them from Aldi figuring it would be no big deal. Unfortunately neither of us could stand the taste of the Aldi brand, which meant another trip to the grocery store and wasted food.
  2. Plan for a few extra meals. If you think you need 15 meals for the month plan for 20, better safe than sorry. I am pretty well versed in our eating habit but we went through several of the meals quicker than I expected. So I had to improvise, which landed me back at the grocery store (for trip number three).
  3. Double up on your staple meals. Make sure you purchase enough food to make your family favorite meals twice. Always great to have extra of staples that don't involve a lot of fresh produce things like Tacos, Chili, or Spaghetti these can all be made on the fly using items you have in your pantry. (If you live near an Aldi they have hard taco shells for $0.88 which is a great pantry item to have on hand.)
  4. Use your Kitchen Whiteboard for meal planning. I used our whiteboard which is inside of our kitchen pantry. I wrote all of our meals on it so there would be no questions about what we're going to eat. This also stopped us from eating out. Excluding our trip to Publix for subs when we ran out of food early and I had no backup ready.

Febuary Meal Plan

  • Chicken Roulade + Mashed Potatoes + Corn
  • Stroganoff
  • Chicken Quesadillas
  • BBQ Chicken
  • Turkey Burger
  • Meatloaf + Mac & Cheese + Greens
  • Chicken Philly
  • Tacos
  • Creamy Chicken + Squash Casserole
  • Cheeseburger Soup
  • Shrimp Fried Rice
  • Chicken Wing
  • Spaghetti
  • Chicken Parmesan Skillet Pasta
  • Sausage & Gravy Biscuits
  • Pizza

Future Planning

In the future, I want to move to smaller portion meals to ensure we don’t have too many leftovers. In the meantime, I have tried splitting a package of meat and using it to make 2 separate meals. This provides us with some variety and eliminates waste. If you're cooking for 3 people or less I would recommend trying this out with your family, switch it up. Splitting your package of meat can also help stretch your meat longer.

For example, a pound of ground turkey (or beef) that I would normally use for spaghetti can instead make spaghetti and tacos. If you're concerned about being hungry, I recommend adding vegetables to create a more filling meal (chopped) spinach and (shredded) zucchini are great additions to both dishes and can be undetected by any picky eaters.

Recipe Binder Printable | Atlanta-Based Lifestyle Blog

December 02, 2016

The holiday season is upon us and I have been reminiscing on our family holidays. Now that it's just my younger Sister and our families in Georgia the holidays are always bittersweet. I wish things were different, I can't remember the last time we were all together during the holiday.

Any who our family has never been one for writing down our recipes. And let me just say we have some amazing cooks my Mom definitely being one of them. I grew up cooking in the kitchen with my Mom on the holidays, being her little helper and learning a few things along the way.

As a thank you for reading my blog, you can download your Recipe Binder and Meal Planning Kit Printable now -no email required!

My mom is a pure perfectionist in the kitchen and can turn anything into a gourmet meal. But she never uses recipes, I mean absolutely never. So everything I know is by pure memorization and trial in error.

But I really want to change that, for the last 2 years I have been saying I'm going to start writing down our recipes. Well if you can relate not to worry.

How to Create the Perfect Meal Plan

November 21, 2016

Don't know if you noticed but I love nothing more than sharing beautifully designed and helpful printable on my blog. This week I am just in time for the holidays. Now I will admit in the past, I truly dreaded the holidays they were always just an excuse to have a break from school.

But now that I have a family of my own, making the holidays special is important to me. During the holidays proper food storage and servings seem to go out the door. Over the past 4 year, I've become a food-Nazi about proper food prep, storage, and overall kitchen hygiene. Primarily because I get stomach bugs quite often, this stopped completely when I changed my diet and followed these simple steps.

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one. ”- Mother Teresa

Proper Food Store

When meal planning it is importance to portion appropriately this will reduce you're out of pocket cost, food waste, and keep you looking slim. With Christmas around the corner I know you could use those extra dollars to get yourself a great gift! Here are my quick tips for how to properly store your food to ensure you get the most bang for your buck, by reducing food waste.
  • Store food should within 2 hours of cooking
  • Discard any food left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours
  • Eat cooked leftovers within 4 days (of cooking)

If your feeling really lazy check out your local dollar tree, they now offer glass bowl. Glass bowls are the most sanitary food storage option. Not to mention they can be used for cooking and heating food.

Proper Serving Sizes

Because it's the holidays I wanted to provide you guys with my quick guide to proper serving sizes for some of my favorite holiday dishes. If you were serving Thanksgivings for 4 adults, this would be the recommended serving size for every to eat twice.
  • Mac & Cheese=4 cups
  • Greens=4 cups
  • Stuffing or Dressing=3 cups
  • Turkey=1.5 lbs
    • Of course it would be impossible to find a half pound turkey.
    • My Recommendations
      • Turkey meatloaf
      • Turkey breast
      • Chicken (whole)
      • Cornish Hens

Grocery Shopping List Android App
Just in case you're not down with the printable. My favorite app (androids) is Food Planner it is simple, clean, and user friendly. Food Planner is perfect
  • Meal Planning
  • Groceries
  • Inventory-If you have the time to update the inventory with your household items. Wow, talk about helpful you get a little alert letting you know when you have items that are low.
  • Saving recipes -I did not use this function because I never follow recipes unless I'm baking

    Random Story

I loved this app! I recorded our entire inventory and used this to manage our household, until my phone was out of storage and I had to delete almost everything to even get the proper updates. So needless to say, I have yet to re-download this app and update my inventory again. The good news is you have to create an account when setting up the app so my previous entries are still stored! So if you overload on selfies like me and have to delete the app temporarily no worries.
