Why Smiling More Should Be Everyone's New Year's Resolution

We tend to be very hard on ourselves around this time of year. We put ourselves through the rigors of a strict dietary regime and grueling sessions at the gym all in service of our New Year’s resolutions. While eating right and getting more exercise are noble goals we can all stand to take a little more pleasure for ourselves amidst the arduous self improvement. 



After all, this is a very demanding time of year. In our absence over the holiday period, we return to desks piled high with paperwork. We awake to cold, dark and forbidding mornings, and by the time we have our time to ourselves again, we’ve lost the last of the daylight. Fortunately, there’s a way to beat the ubiquitous January blues without spending a fortune on gym membership and equipment or depriving ourselves of the simple pleasures of comfort food…

Just smile!

It’s such a tiny thing; using a mere 26 muscles yet it can make the world of difference to your friends, your work colleagues, your loved ones, your children and even complete strangers. Surely, you’ve experienced the simple joy that can come with a dazzling smile from a stranger like a waitress, a store clerk or even a complete stranger offering you their seat on the bus. It’s a tiny, tiny gift that costs us nothing but can make all the difference to others. It’s not completely altruistic, either. Smiling is a proven mood booster. Smiling triggers the areas of the brain associated with reward, meaning that when we smile we produce a tiny amount of the neurotransmitter dopamine. This boosts your mood while improving cognitive function and reducing stress. In short, smiling just makes you a better version of yourself.

So, promise yourself, the next time your boss, your kids or your other half stress you out… Just break out your best smile.




You’re so pretty when you smile!

The benefits of smiling aren’t just internal. Many consider a pretty smile one of the most attractive qualities in a person. Let’s face it, all that time spent at the gym and cutting out unhealthy foods is done in the name of good health, but it’s also because we want to improve our appearance. Slimming down and gaining lean muscle mass can make us feel more attractive, more confident and more empowered, but a slim figure is no substitute for a dazzling smile.

Many people are a little self conscious about their teeth so if this self consciousness prevents you from flashing your gnashers, maybe 2018 is the year to do something about it.
