5 Reasons You're Tired That You Didn't Think Of

Tiredness feels horrible. It makes us grumpy, and it causes us to make mistakes. For some, like those behind the wheel of a car, it can be really dangerous. If you’re fed up with your boss asking you why you’re so tired and you not having a valid reason, it’s time to dig a little deeper. Sleep quality can be affected by a lot of things. Some are dangerous and need medical attention, like sleep apnea. Other reasons for your lack of quality sleep can be tougher to figure out:

That Late Night Chocolate Bar
Chocolate often contains a lot more than fat and sugar. It can contain chemicals and stimulants like caffeine that can keep you up at night! The sugar won’t do you any favors either. Some say that dark chocolate can help you sleep. It is often dubbed the ‘healthy’ chocolate. However, if you have trouble winding down and relaxing for sleep before 11 pm, consider giving up the chocolate after dinner.

Your Phone
There has been a lot of buzz about the harmful effects of blue light lately. This is the light that is on the same part of the spectrum as daylight. The reason why it’s bad? Your brain releases chemicals or hormones when it is dark that help you feel sleepy and fall asleep. If you’re in bed reading your phone screen, your poor brain might think it’s still daytime and keep you alert. If you go to, you can find out a bit more about this phenomenon. Swap the phone for a good paperback in the evenings.

This is a far more common condition than you might think. Nobody really knows for certain why some of us have a less than energetic thyroid gland. Sometimes the pituitary gland is to blame. Either way, you can feel completely run down, lethargic and lacking that Joie de vivre. You can artificially boost your thyroxine levels. If you find your hair is thin and your skin is in poor condition, your doctor might test for this condition and prescribe you with medication to help. Make sure you have plenty of iron and vitamin B in your diet to help with your circulation and metabolism.

Wrong Temperature
Our bodies are very sensitive to changes in the ambient temperature. If you tend to throw your covers off (or your sleeping partner steals them), then you might get chilly in the night and stir. This interruption to your slumber can upset your sleep cycles and cause you to feel tired. If this happens to you, you might find you’re quite forgetful, lacking focus, and making mistakes. You might even confuse dreams with reality as you remember them more. Check your air con or heating is set to a cool yet comfortable level that can be maintained all night.

Didn’t Exercise
Sometimes you just don’t seem to find the time to get to the gym or go for that run. You’re exhausted from a busy day at work, but you just can’t sleep. Try walking in the park during lunchtime so you can enjoy the fresh air. It might make all the difference to your sleep tonight.

Sleep well.
